Virat Kohli Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s Record For Most 100s In Successful Chases In ODIs – New era under the leadership of Virat Kohli began on Sunday when India took on England in 1st ODI in Pune. Chasing massive total of 351, India found themselves in some trouble at 63/4. But it was captain Virat Kohli and local boy Kedar Jadhav who rescued the team to a famous win in Pune. Centuries from both the batsman enabled the team to cross the line. While doing so many records tumbled out of which Virat Kohli’s record of most 100s in successful chases in limited overs cricket was the highlight. The reason of being the highlight is because the century on Sunday broke the record set by master blaster Sachin Tendulkar a few years before.

His hundred helped Aussies to chase 249 in just 45 overs.
9. Herschelle Gibbs (7 Centuries)
Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs who holds the record of hitting 6 sixes in an over has been a legend in world cricket. He has hit 7 centuries in successful run chases in 80 innings. During South Africa’s Carribean tour in 2001, Gibbs hit 104 from 141 balls which resulted in his first century in a successful run chase. In the same series, South African opener blasted 107 in another winning cause. His highest score in a successful run chase was a brilliant 175 against Australia in the historic run chase where his heroics helped the Proteas chase down a mammoth 434.
8. Ricky Ponting (8 Centuries)
One of the most successful captains in the cricket world, Ricky Ponting is 2nd on the list of most centuries in ODIs. He has 30 ODI centuries out of which 8 centuries have resulted in successful chases in ODI. Ponting’s first century in successful chase came in 1998 when he guided the team with an unbeaten 124 in an away win against Pakistan in Lahore. His highest score in a run chase is 126 which came at Nottingham against England in 2009. Ricky Ponting was known for his leadership. He has managed to take the team over the line every time he has scored the century while chasing.
7. Chris Gayle – 8 Centuries
Nothing a bowler can do when Chris Gayle is in form. It is a treat for cricket fans when Gayle is a tormentor on his day. In 61 innings that he has played in successful run chases, he has managed to hit 8 centuries. Out of 22 total ODI centuries, Gayle has 10 centuries while batting second and 8 tons have resulted in the winning cause. His 103 against India in Nagpur in 2002 was the 1st of the 8 centuries. His top score in a successful run chase is 133* vs South Africa.
6. Adam Gilchrist – 8 Centuries
One of the best wicketkeeper-batsman of all time is Adam Gilchrist. No wonder he has made it to this list. He has managed to rescue his side in all formats of the game. Australian wicketkeeper has 8 centuries under his belt in successful run chases. Gilchrist has 16 centuries in ODI cricket out of which 8 were in winning cause while chasing. For Gilchrist, the first 4 centuries in ODIs were while chasing which resulted in a winning cause. While his highest score batting first is 172 against Zimbabwe, his top score in a run chase is 131 against Sri Lanka that he hit in 1999 at Sydney.
5. Tillakaratne Dilshan – 9 Centuries
Sri Lankan opener who has made 60 appearances in successful chases has managed to score 9 centuries. Dilshan who has overall 22 centuries in One Day Internationals scored his maiden century while chasing vs India at Rajkot. His brilliant innings of 160 was not enough for team to over par the total of 414 set by Indians. However, in the very next game, he scored 123 which took Sri Lanka to a win at Nagpur. This was his first century in a successful run chase.
4. Sanath Jayasuriya – 9 Centuries
The former Sri Lankan opener has notched up 9 centuries in 103 innings in successful run chases for Sri Lanka. An explosive batsman who has 28 centuries to his name has 10 centuries batting second out of which 9 have been in winning cause. His first ton in a successful run chase was against India in Colombo in 1996 when he scored an unbeaten 120. Jayasuriya’s highest score in a successful run chase is 152 that came off 99 balls vs England while chasing 324. His knock helped Sri Lanka to chase this score in less than 35 overs.
3. Saeed Anwar – 9 Centuries
Saeed Anwar, opening batsman for Pakistan held the record for highest individual score in ODIs for over a decade was one of the renowned batsmen in run chases. In 1993, Anwar managed to hit 131 to register first century in winning cause while chasing. He went on to score 8 similar centuries in his career but his 131 from 141 balls remained the top score while chasing.
2. Sachin Tendulkar (14 Centuries)
Sachin Tendulkar without whom world cricket history is incomplete has 14 ODI centuries to his name in successful run chases. He holds the record for most centuries in ODIs (49) out of which 16 were scored while batting second. His best knock has been 175 vs Australia in 2009 but India ended up losing by 3 runs.

The master of modern day, Virat Kohli has managed to break the record set by master blaster by scoring 15 centuries in successful run chases. Virat is known as a run chasing machine and out of 25 ODI centuries, Virat has managed 17 tons in the second innings. Out of 17, 15 have been in a winning cause. Virat who is still young has the ability to score more such famous centuries for India.
